Often I get the question from someone wanting to enhance their “packaging options” about what are referred to in the industry as “digipaks.” In case you have not seen these, they are fully-printed cardboard sheets, CD jewel case or DVD Amaray case size, heavier stock with a plastic tray glued to the inside printed panels. Sound visually familiar? OK, so let’s discuss some pros and cons as there is a time, place and market for these, but is it best for “you?”

On the positive side, these are unique, eye-catching pieces, different of course from the standard pastic cases as the pieces themselves are printed versus having printed inserts put inside a plastic case. Also, other features include foil print board that they can be printed on or embossment that can be incorporated onto the packaging itself. These are features not available when you put printed inserts into a plastic CD/DVD case.

On the not-so-positive side, they are more expensive (for the most part), especially in the 1,000-5,000 unit range, if you compare to the more traditional, plastic packaging with inserts. Also the “perceived value” may not be quite as high for retail applications–it depends. Look at most of the CD/DVD retail items you see in your larger video and music stores. What are most packaged in? Yup, the traditional plastic cases, because the public will simply “look” at one of these packages and “assume” a $14.99-$19.99 value. When they see something printed on a heavier cardstock, even though it may have cost “you” more money, they may not feel it has the same value as the plastic packaging. Yes, I know that makes no sense, but it is true, as evidenced by the overwhelming number of plastic packages seen in retail stores versus the digipaks.

If you want to add some “sizzle” to your steak, many will opt for what are referred to as “O-cards” or “slipcase covers” which are printed pieces open on the top and bottom that can slide over a CD jewel case or DVD Amaray case, allowing for foil print, embossment, etc. This most definitely offers a higher perceived value without sacrificing the perceived value of public opinion on the plastic packaging that is more familiar.

Digipaks certainly have their place, but more often than not, we do not see these in retail store applications (retail online, retail in-person are different matters). It is always best to talk to your Account Manager about your project and let us help you determine what is best for “your” project based on your vision as well as our experience and expertise. That’s part of what you are paying for as well at Duplium, so enjoy!
