There is a lot of buzz about how easy it is to get your music out to the market after you finish recording your tracks for your latest CD release. One of the main ways I am hearing more and more is independent musicians or bands releasing their project via a download service. Most all of us have used these services like iTunes etc but my main question is, are there any independent bands making money from this method.

I have spoke with many of my musician friends to ask how sales going for their new CD and almost all of them tell me they are making all the CD sales at shows, clinics and retail mom and pop CD stores. Not any of my friends have had anyone download more than 5 or 10 times but all of them are moving CD’s in the hundreds and even thousands. I know it is technology advancement that got us from Vinyl Records to Cassettes then to CD product but it seems as if right now download services are not the best route to get your music out fast on a budget.

You need to have it available to fans because people like to buy the CD right after your show is over. If you hand them a flyer and say when you get home and the thrill is gone please go to www.notgoingtobuy.com and download my album most likely they will not do it. Most unsigned bands do not have the marketing budget to keep in the face of their fans like the majors so it may be best to replicate a nice CD Package and sell them everywhere you go…
